Letter to DWP Select Committee.

Monday 6th January 2014

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen and Members of the Select Committee for Works & Pensions. Whilst appreciating that you are not my MP in the UK, you nonetheless represent a powerful group of responsible people in Parliament from whom I wish to seek assistance and to crave your indulgence.

I write to you in the fullest support of one of my colleagues Brian Cave who has supplied you with an excellent Briefing Document entitled “The Battle to keep the Winter Fuel Payment”, and because I am a time-served British Taxpayer having also created some 1400 man-years of employment in the UK over a 20 year period and all the ensuing tax and N.I collections that my actions brought to the UK treasury.

I now find that I am under threat of being discriminated against by the British government for choosing to live on the European Mainland instead of the UK as is my right under the Treaty of Rome and all other subsequent treaties, modifications, e.t.c., that my government has signed up to over the years.

For the record I am also a very active blogger on the subject of people’s rights to live, work and retire freely within the EU region without fear of being, threatened, abused, discriminated against, ridiculed or punished by their sovereign government for doing so.

Those of you who have children of school age will know only too well about ‘school bullies’ and that generally, it is only their physical size that enables them to get away with it for so long. As most of us come to realise ‘Bullies are Cowards at Heart’.

Unfortunately, governments can sometimes come across as bullies too through the abuse or misuse of power and it is with a mixture of sadness and anger that I complain that such abuses of power and bullying are now prevalent in the current government’s thinking and behaviour and none are worse than those actions and words of the Secretary of State for Works and Pensions – Ian Duncan Smith. There is no need for me to quote any of his aggressive words towards Elderly British citizens living on the continent of Europe; they are already included in Brian Cave’s Briefing Paper.

This man clearly believes us to be social outcasts as particularly demonstrated by his appalling collusion with the tasteless Daily Mail. His failure to get away with one episode of downright discrimination against pensioners thanks to the European Court of Justice, has only spurred him on to try it once again through a collection of very dodgy temperature data that has been meddled with, debased and thereby totally discredited.

In a court of law, tampering with the evidence would be considered a contempt of court and a criminal offence.

Not to be put off, he insists that he is right and everyone else is wrong. But just for short measure and to frighten a few thousand more elderly people into a possible premature death he issues almost daily threats against expat’s security in Europe.

Smith’s creation of a ‘Badge of Shame’ for retired people is synonymous with the Yellow Star of David that Hitler ordered all Jews to wear on their clothing to differentiate them from so-called ‘Normal’ people as a forerunner to his abhorrent annihilation plans.

The document IDS’s department will issue requires pensioner s living in Europe to state they are ‘still alive’ and must prove it by getting a third party witness to confirm it for further embarrassment or lose their State Pension. We believe that the intention of this document is to create ‘fear’ and ‘anxiety’ and is further designed to ‘shame’ pensioners for still being alive and receiving their pension. No pensioners living in the UK will be required to complete such a document!

Most elderly people are proud and independent and do not wish to be a burden on anyone and therefore it is perceivable that some may be driven to suicide by this shameless and heartless plan.

Since then we have seen the latest threats which are intended to bar any visiting expat UK citizen from even emergency health treatment in the UK despite them having paid for it for over 40 years. This is something that non-British citizens entering the UK will not have to suffer.

Add to this a variety of proposals to frustrate the reciprocal sharing of health care costs across Europe and force elderly people to take out private health insurance in France, Spain, e.t.c., which they cannot afford.

It appears to many of us that the Government in general and Smith in particular are trying to muster votes for the next election by employing the politics of envy.  Additionally, they are trying to recoup their vote from UKIP by their hostility towards Europe as a whole.

Finally, on the matter of the Winter Fuel Payment, I recently turned up some interesting research for an article I wrote entitled “Premature Winter Deaths in Spain 16% Higher than the UK” and which was widely published and read. It can also be viewed on www.clivewalley.com

A Study by Dr J Healy of the University College of Dublin relating to 10 consecutive years of data across Europe showed premature winter deaths in Spain were indeed 16% higher than the UK, The good Doctor notes in his report that in the past, Southern Europe had been overlooked when considering seasonal variations in mortality.

He Says, in his report “This may be attributable to the perception that such countries are not affected by excess winter deaths because of their mild winter climates.”

He goes on to conclude “This shows that such a perception is highly mistaken”.

I have lived through 10 bitterly-cold winters in Spain with no central heating and a poorly insulated house. The daytime temperatures can be quite warm and pleasant but the night-time temperatures plunge, very often to sub-zero levels. Electricity and gas are very expensive here for heating and most pensioners living here; have to rely on going to bed very early to keep warm. The Winter Fuel Allowance does at least allow us to keep a portable gas fire going for some of the days. It certainly does not get spent on wine or gin and tonics as Mr Smith would have the voters believe.

It is my hope that these few words will help you to better understand the feelings of abandonment we pensioners are suffering from these daily threats and the anger that is being generated amongst the silent majority. Please question and examine the true purpose and merits if any, of this Winter Fuel Payment Snatch and above all else the bullying tactics of the Secretary of State responsible.

Kindest Regards and a Happy New Year

Thank you for your opinion. However, the UK is far from being oppressed by the EU. We are one of the leaders not followers.

This proposal is in my opinion a clear breach of EU law.
